CANCELLARA —

“THE ORIGINS”

Cancellara (Basilicata region, Italy) has preserved the urban and architectural features unaltered over the time, which still make it one of the most important traces of the Lucanian history.

The fact that there was a necropolis dating back to the 5th century BC, proofs the presence of a housing settlement since ancient times.

There are several hypotheses of the authorship of this place but according to tradition the name and the origins of the village came from the Roman commander Pietro Cancellario, who lived in the 3rd century BC. We can find the gravestone that preserves its remains in the church of Santa Caterina di Alessandria, which is located in the lower part of the ancient village.

The only thing that we know for sure is that you will find yourself in an important cultural site that encompasses history, customs and traditions of an ancient past.

BETWEEN LEGENDS AND TREASURES NEVER FOUND —

“THE MEDIEVAL CASTLE”

The medieval castle is the most important monument of Cancellara (Basilicata region, Italy). It was probably built around 1300 by the Acquaviva d’Aragona Family and populated over the years by the dynasties of feudal princes such as the Carafas, the Caracciolos and the Pappacodas.

Made of limestone, imposing and majestic, custodian of legends and treasures that have never been found, the castle dominates the village and the ancient village. It is an incredible artistic and cultural attraction, and today it’s home to the Basilicata section of the Italian Institute of Castles.

It is possible to admire its beauty in the fresco which is preserved in the Salone degli Stemmi of the Matera’s episcope.
